Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a weekend warrior, injuries like muscle strains, joint pain, or ligament issues can interrupt your progress and affect your quality of life. At Ferrell-Whited Physical Therapy Services, we specialize in comprehensive sports rehabilitation — from minor sprains to more serious injuries — to help you return to peak performance safely and efficiently.

Comprehensive Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Services

Our team of experienced therapists includes many who were athletes themselves — so we understand firsthand how difficult sports-related injuries can be, both physically and emotionally. That’s why we’re committed to providing personalized sports rehabilitation tailored to your specific needs, whether you’ve experienced an acute injury or are managing a chronic condition.

We treat a full spectrum of sports injuries, including:

Biomechanical injuries caused by overuse or improper form

Sprains, dislocations, and fractures

Knee, shoulder, ankle, and elbow injuries

Thanks to close partnerships with leading orthopedic and sports medicine physicians throughout Northeast Ohio, we stay informed of the latest treatment strategies and developments in the field.

Specialized Treatments to Accelerate Healing

Manual Therapy (“Hands-On” Therapy)

Our hands-on approach to physical therapy includes joint and soft tissue mobilization techniques. This method helps relieve pain, restore range of motion, improve function, and support full rehabilitation. Manual therapy plays a crucial role in accelerating the healing process and preventing re-injury.

Aquatic Therapy

Available at our Medina Main Clinic and Rootstown – NEOMED locations, aquatic therapy provides a low-impact environment for healing. Water resistance reduces stress on joints while helping to build strength, improve mobility, and reduce swelling. This gentle but effective therapy is ideal for patients recovering from surgery, joint injuries, or chronic conditions.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a modern therapeutic technique that targets myofascial trigger points—tight bands of muscle that contribute to pain and restricted movement. By inserting thin, sterile needles directly into these trigger points, we help reduce pain, release muscle tension, and promote healing from within. Dry needling is particularly beneficial for sports-related injuries, enhancing mobility and speeding recovery when combined with other rehabilitation techniques.

Pain Management

Pain management is an essential component of our sports rehabilitation programs. Our therapists are trained not only to address your discomfort but also to identify and treat the root causes of your pain—whether from trauma, inflammation, or overuse. We aim to prevent injuries from becoming chronic and ensure a successful recovery.

Why Choose Ferrell-Whited for Sports Rehabilitation?

At Ferrell-Whited, sports medicine is a core part of our mission. Every patient receives an individualized care plan designed to meet their unique goals, so you can recover efficiently and confidently. When you work with our experienced clinicians, you’ll receive hands-on treatment focused on getting you back to your best—on and off the field.

When you need physical therapy, getting a second opinion or choosing the therapist who’s best for you is your right as a patient. This decision should always be yours — free from pressure or restrictions from your doctor or healthcare network.

What Is the Stark Law?

To protect your freedom of choice, the U.S. government created the Stark Law in 1989. Also called the Physician Self-Referral Law, this rule says that doctors can’t refer patients to certain services — like physical therapy, labs, or home health care — if the doctor or their family has a financial interest in that business. The law was designed to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that your care is based on what’s best for you, not what benefits your doctor financially.

If a doctor breaks this law, there can be serious consequences, including large fines and being banned from federal healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

What Services Does Stark Law Cover?

The Stark Law applies to what are called “Designated Health Services” (DHS), which include:

Physical therapy

Occupational therapy

Clinical laboratory services

Home health services

Prescription medications

And several other specific services

Why Independent Physical Therapy Matters

Some doctors may suggest you only use therapists or services within their own healthcare network. They might say this makes communication or treatment easier. However, choosing an independent provider like Ferrell-Whited Physical Therapy Services often means:

More personalized, hands-on care

Easier scheduling and communication

Convenient locations close to home

A team that truly knows you and your needs

Experience the Ferrell-Whited Difference

Roughly 40% of Americans experience vertigo at least once in their lives, according to a UCSF Health study. Dealing with the spinning sensations and resulting dizziness and balance issues that characterize such attacks can be disturbing, making everyday activities like driving, riding a bike, or even walking a chore.

The physical therapists at Ferrell-Whited understand how isolating and disorienting vertigo can be and have had significant success helping patients deal with this affliction. We offer effective help for vertigo, providing patients with a long-term treatment plan and helping to restore hope and peace of mind.

We offer comprehensive, effective treatment

To understand your symptoms, we first assess your illness and then recommend a proven course of treatment that can provide relief and improve your balance and mobility. We take a comprehensive approach when treating vertigo, which differs from traditional treatment that tends to concentrate on inner ear issues alone.

We practice vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), which includes exercises to help the nervous system adapt and become desensitized to vertigo over time, eye movement control, balance therapy, and general fitness exercises. We also focus on canalith repositioning maneuvers that seek to reposition inner ear crystals that can cause vertigo symptoms. We holistically attack the problem with regular assessments and strong patient education that keep you fully informed about your treatment schedule, prognosis, and future treatment options as you address your infirmity.

Treating the whole person

We investigate factors like eye issues, central or neurological causes of dizziness, and balance-related parts of the anatomy, including peripheral joints such as ankles, knees, or hips. We also focus on cervical proprioception, which is the sense that helps patients maintain their posture and supports bodily movement. The goal is to boost the patient’s quality of life, prevent falls and other balance-related issues, and provide patients with improved balance and a better quality of life.

As one of the few private practice physical therapy clinics in Northeast Ohio, Ferrell-Whited is known for the excellent support we provide patients and their families. Our main campus is located in Medina, Ohio, with branches in Lake Medina (Women’s Health Clinic), Sharon Crossings/Montrose, Rootstown (Northeast Ohio Medical University, or NEOMED, clinic), Kent, and Stow.

Chronic pain can be life-altering. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 20% of Americans-over 50 million people-experienced chronic pain in 2021. For many, traditional treatments fall short, but there are alternative options that can help.

Dry Needling and Much More

At Ferrell-Whited, dry needling is just one of the many advanced therapy techniques we offer to help patients manage chronic pain and accelerate recovery. Dry needling is particularly effective for treating myofascial and musculoskeletal pain, especially when combined with other hands-on physical therapy techniques. Our clinicians often integrate dry needling into a personalized treatment plan that may also include exercise, stretching, massage, and additional therapies available at Ferrell-Whited.

With multiple locations throughout Northeast Ohio, Ferrell-Whited provides dry needling alongside a broad range of innovative physical therapy treatments. Please note that not all services are available at every location.

Aquatic Therapy: Reduces joint compression and promotes pain-free movement, making it ideal for chronic pain, injury, and disabilities.

Balance Rehabilitation: Improves balance and reduces the risk of falls through targeted strength and stability exercises.

Cupping Therapy: Uses suction to draw debris, fluid, and stagnant blood to the skin’s surface, supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Pain Management: Offers a variety of innovative treatments-including dry needling-to address pain from multiple angles.

Sports Injury Rehab: Combines traditional and advanced therapies to help athletes and active individuals recover and return to their activities.

Vestibular Rehabilitation: Provides exercises to manage dizziness and balance issues, improving quality of life for those with vestibular disorders.

Women’s Health: Focuses on physical therapy for urology, the female reproductive system, and post-partum recovery.

How Dry Needling Works

Dry needling involves inserting thin, sterile needles into tight muscles or “trigger points”-knotted, sensitive areas that can cause pain and restrict movement. This technique increases blood flow, enhances flexibility, and can improve range of motion. Many patients experience immediate improvements in muscle mobility. Dry needling also promotes healing, speeds up recovery, and reduces pain, all with minimal side effects.

Why Choose Ferrell-Whited?

At Ferrell-Whited, we put your recovery first. Our experienced clinicians provide one-on-one, hands-on care and develop individualized treatment plans to help you reach your goals. Dry needling is just one of the many tools we use to address your pain and support your journey to better health.

Finding a local source of physical therapy is essential for patients in recovery, which is why having excellent physical therapists close to Montrose, Wadsworth, Granger and Sharon Crossings is so valuable. Ferrell-Whited, one of a handful of private practice therapy clinics in Northeast Ohio, has established the Sharon Crossings/Montrose Clinic at 784 Medina Road, Suite 103, Medina, OH, which offers a comprehensive array of physical therapies.

Balance rehabilitation: Critical for bedbound patients and seniors with balance issues, therapists work with patients on balance and strength training exercises to build lower body strength.

Cupping therapy: A centuries-old technique, cupping therapy helps the rid the body of debris, fluid, and stagnant blood through the application of plastic cups that create suction that moves the stagnant blood to the surface where the body can flush it away.

Dry needling: Used to treat chronic muscle soreness and pain, dry needling involves the insertion of a thin needle into “trigger points” or tight muscles that surround the point of pain. It can relieve pain and restore healthy muscle function.

Pain management: For chronic pain sufferers, physical therapy can bring relief from daily pain. Typical chronic pain sources include fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and lower back and neck pain. Typical treatments include stretching, low-impact aerobic exercise, strengthening exercises, and specific pain relief exercises.

Sports injury rehab: From shin splits to rotator cuff injuries, sports injuries are a fact of life for active adults. Many of the sports injury therapists at Ferrell-Whited are former high school or college athletes who understand the challenges on a personal level and are tuned in to the latest sports medicine trends and treatments.

Vestibular rehabilitation: Attacks of vertigo, dizziness, unsteady balance, and falls can be treated via vestibular rehabilitation. This treatment addresses strokes, traumatic brain injuries, migraine headaches, vertigo, falling risk, and others. And where traditional vestibular rehabilitation concentrates on the inner ear, our treatments address other symptoms that cause dizziness, vertigo, and loss of balance.
